Reproductive Health and Rights | Population & Development | Gender Equality | Humanitarian Assistance | Youth

Women's reproductive health and rights feature as a central theme in UNFPA's intervention in Afghanistan. UNFPA efforts for reproductive health and rights are manifested in institutional support and capacity development of the Ministry of Public Health, professional institutions, and support and partnerships with professional societies such as the Afghanistan Midwife Association.

UNFPA also promotes expansion of reproductive health service delivery through training of community midwives and operation of mobile health teams in remote difficult-to-reach parts of its target provinces. UNFPA strives to promote the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity.

In Afghanistan, its efforts focus on contributing to the MDG 5 indicators of reducing maternal mortality, increasing and improving access of women to skilled reproductive health care providers and family planning resources and information. UNFPA initiatives to enable Afghanistan's health care system achieve country's national development goals and the global millennium development goal related to maternal health:

  • Engagement with Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and other UN and non-UN stakeholders to revise and improve national reproductive health policy, strategy, and action plan;
  • Increasing the number of trained female health care providers who can provide reproductive health and family planning services by sponsoring community midwife education programs for underserved communities;
  • Implementation of the MoPH mandated mobile health care services in remote villages, to ensure maximum coverage of reproductive health care and family planning services;
  • Introduction of an innovative strategy - the Family Health Houses -- to expand coverage of maternal and reproductive health care and family planning services;
  • Response to the problem of obstetric fistula;
  • Promotion of adolescent reproductive health awareness among Afghan youth.
