Date: 21/08/2011

Vientiane, 12 August 2011.- Around 60 young males and females between 16 and 24 years old, from across the capital, gathered in Vientiane to celebrate International Youth Day (IYD) observed globally on August 12.

Under the theme "Youth Involvement: Opportunity for Development in Lao PDR", International Youth Day presented an opportunity to highlight the contributions that young people are making to society and to advance their full and effective participation in development.

The activity included information sharing, group discussions and performances about youth-related issues, with the young participants going away with practical plans for further action.

The event saw active participation from Burnet Institute, Care International, Friends International, Lao National Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS, Purple Sky Network, Save the Children Norway, UNIAP, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNODC, Vientiane Youth Centre for Health and Development, the World Bank and support from Vientiane College.

This year's International Youth Day represented the culmination of the International Year of Youth (IYY) - August 12th 2010 to August 12th 2011- and the 25th Anniversary of the first International Year of Youth. The Year aimed to promote the ideals of peace and solidarity across generations, cultures, religions and civilizations.
