South Africaâs population has increased to 52, 98 million, according to the latest figures released by Stats SAâs. The 2013 mid-year estimate released on the 14 th of April has females making up 51% of the population at 27, 16 million.

Foreign Ambassadors visit local township Foundation doing work with child headed households

More than half a dozen foreign ambassadors make their way up the gravel driveway of the Ratang Bana (Love the children) Foundation in Alexandra, a local township in Johannesburg. UNFPA tackles the tough business of Gender Based Violence in South Africa

UNFPA is working on combating Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the country as well as to strengthen sexual and reproductive health (SRH) service provision to citizens South Africa. In 2010/11 the South Africa Police Service said that more than 60 thousand cases of sexual assault were reported. In partnership with Irish Aid, UNFPA is responding to the high levels of GBV in the country by working with the provincial departments in four of South Africa's nine provinces - the Eastern Cape (EC), Free State (FS), Kwazulu Natal and Limpopo (LP). The project is in response to government's recognition that GBV is a human rights issue with major adverse health and social development implications and that access to safe, effective family planning is a human right.

South Africa lauches CARMMA

South Africa Launches the Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality (CARMMA)

The Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has once more demonstrated the country's commitment in improving health in South Africa. On 4 May 2012, he launched South Africa's new campaign, âCampaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality (CARMMA)' at Osindisweni Hospital, Verulam in KwaZulu Natal. This campaign aims to reduce number of women who die as a result of childbearing, during the pregnancy or within 42 days of delivery or termination of pregnancy. The theme of the launch was âSouth Africa Cares, No Woman Should Die Whilst Giving Life'.

South Africa welcomes baby number seven billion to the world

Refilwe Aaronica Mashitisa was born on 31 October at Mankweng Hospital in Limpopo. She got her special middle name, Aaronica , from the top physician in the country, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi. Celebrating the symbolic birth of the World's 7 billionth baby in South Africa together with UNFPA, the honourable Minster of Health delivered baby by Caesarean section himself, assisted by two other doctors. Â UNFPA Deputy Representative commented on the event saying: "I wonder if there is any other country in the world where a health minister would scrub up to deliver a baby?" Â

Eastern Cape commemorates the 7 billion milestone

UNFPA Officer in Charge Dr Benjamin Alli gave a key note address during the Eastern Cape commemoration of the 7 billion campaign which was held in Bhisho Hospital on the 10 th November 2011. In his speech he highlighted the birth of the 7 billionth baby as an opportunity, a challenge and a call for action. It is an opportunity because of global connectedness, a challenge because of emerging challenges like climate change, gender based violence and poverty, it is a call for action because of the shared responsibility globally. He further stressed the need to ensure that gender equality is attained as the goal by ensuring that both boy and girl child have the same opportunities and that empowering them with education enables them to make informed reproductive choices.

South Africa has committed to achieving 'four zeros' in the fight against HIV and AIDS, President Jacob Zuma announced. HIV prevalence has increased slightly and spiked for the older age group of pregnant women, the country heard at a World AIDS Day event in Port Elizabeth on 1 December.
