Neqsege is a district located in the Tigray region, which extends from the Semen Mountains. The district has rough terrain, which poses a challenge to villagers, especially pregnant women. Due to the difficult terrain, building infrastructure is quite challenging, and the conflict that lasted for two years destroyed most health facilities, making access to reproductive health services difficult. As a result, maternal deaths have sharply increased, particularly in the district of Neqsege, which has the highest mortality rate among pregnant women. To address this issue, the UNFPA has been working to strengthen maternity waiting homes. These residential facilities are located near or within health centres, providing a safe place for high-risk pregnant women to stay until delivery, ensuring they are close to medical facilities when they need them most.
